Association of left subclavian artery coverage without revascularization and spinal cord ischemia in patients undergoing thoracic endovascular aortic repair: A Vascular Quality Initiative ® analysis.
Conclusion For patients undergoing left subclavian artery coverage during thoracic endovascular aortic repair, the addition of a revascularization procedure was associated with a significantly lower incidence of spinal cord ischemia. PMID: 29022855 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Society for Vascular Surgery will participate in a new global vascular practice guidelines initiative
Recognizing the global nature of vascular care, the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) is joining the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) and the World Federation of Vascular Societies (WFVS) in a new initiative to create global practice guidelines. In this process, the SVS represents national, regional, and local vascular societies in North America; the ESVS represents national vascular societies from Europe; and the WFVS represents the Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery, the Japanese Society for Vascular Surgery, the Vascular Society of India, the Vascular Society of Southern Africa, the Asi...

Stroke rate after endovascular aortic interventions in the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Quality Initiative
The stroke rate after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), particularly complex EVAR such as fenestrated EVAR (FEVAR) and chimney EVAR (chEVAR), is not well defined. Whereas stroke is a well-established risk of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR), the impact of procedural characteristics on stroke remains unclear. Therefore, we characterized the risk of stroke after endovascular aortic interventions in the Vascular Quality Initiative database and identified procedural characteristics associated with stroke.

The study of transcarotid artery revascularization under local versus general anesthesia with results from the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Quality Initiative.
CONCLUSIONS: Excellent outcomes from transcarotid artery revascularization for carotid stenosis were observed in the VQI database between the years 2016 and 2018, under both local anesthesia and general anesthesia. The data demonstrate the choice of anesthesia for transcarotid artery revascularization does not appear to have any effect on clinical outcomes. Surgical teams should perform transcarotid artery revascularization under the anesthesia type they are most comfortable with. PMID: 32408855 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Role of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 protein in the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells.
Abstract OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the primary cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The abnormal proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is a key event in the pathogenesis of CVD. The functional and phenotypic changes in vascular cells are mediated by complex signaling cascades that initiate and control genetic reprogramming. Many studies have demonstrated that signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) regulates a diverse array of functions relevant to atherosclerosis. METHODS: In this review, we summarize the studies on the STAT3-mediated prolifera...

Perioperative cardiovascular complications rate and activity of coagulation and fibrinolysis among patients undergoing vascular surgery for peripheral artery disease and abdominal aortic aneurysm.
CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests higher activation of coagulation and relatively lower fibrinolytic activity in peripheral artery disease group compared to patients undergoing surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm without a significant difference in cardiovascular outcomes. Inclusion of Pulmonary Embolism Response in a Level I Vascular Emergency Program: A Good Fit in a Collaborative, Multidisciplinary System
The value of a systematic approach for assessment and management of life and limb threatening emergencies has been demonstrated by the success of organized trauma centers, stroke centers, and STEMI programs throughout the United States. Recognizing the applicability of a standardized care process to vascular emergencies, Dr. Michael Dalsing of Indiana University –Methodist Hospital led his academic faculty and hospital in the development of a statewide referral and rapid response system for vascular emergencies in 2009.

Shared quality data are associated with increased protamine use and reduced bleeding complications after carotid endarterectomy in the Vascular Study Group of New England
Objective: The goal of this study was to evaluate whether protamine usage after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) increased within the Vascular Study Group of New England (VSGNE) in response to studies indicating that protamine reduces bleeding complications associated with CEA without increasing the risk of stroke. Methods: We reviewed 10,059 CEAs, excluding concomitant coronary bypass, performed within the VSGNE from January 2003 to July 2012. Protamine use and reoperation for bleeding were evaluated monthly using statistical process control. Twelve centers and 77 surgeons entering the VSGNE between 2003 and 2008 were classifi...

Drain Placement Confers No Benefit Following Carotid Endarterectomy in the Vascular Quality Initiative
Whereas bleeding complications requiring a return to the operating room (OR) after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) are infrequent (1%), they are associated with increased 30-day combined postoperative stroke/death rate. Drain placement (DR) after CEA varies among vascular surgeons, and there are limited data to support the practice. The goal of this study was to evaluate factors leading to DR and the effect of DR on postoperative outcomes including return to OR for bleeding, stroke, and death.

External Validation of the Vascular Study Group of New England Risk Predictive Model of Adverse Outcomes After Carotid Endarterectomy in Procedure-Targeted American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Database
Previously, we described a Vascular Study Group of New England (VSGNE) risk predictive model to predict composite adverse outcomes (postoperative death, stroke, myocardial infarction, or discharge to extended care facilities) after carotid endarterectomy (CEA). The goal of this study was to externally validate this model in an independent database.

Recurrent arterial thrombosis in a patient with Fabry disease: case report

Early diagnosis of atherosclerosis with panoramic radiographs: a review
The objective of this study is to highlight the importance of panoramic radiographs for diagnosis of arterial disease, by means of a bibliographic review. The PubMed database was searched using the keywords “ atherosclerosis ” and “ panoramic ” , with the filters “ last 5 years ” and “ humans ” . Twenty articles were identified, six of which were chosen for this study because they were open access. The review concluded that panoramic radiographs enable early diagnosis of carotid artery calcification, resulting in earlier interventions, and offer an accessible cost.Resumo Doen ças das artérias carótidas e...
